I feel like I have a more holistic idea of self-care than before I began the book study. Previously I had many good habits but the intention behind some of them was not from a place of love for myself but rather a feeling of obligation.

I enjoyed playing around with different practices.

The Self-Care inventory and the process of creating Guidelines for Living (Rules for Life) was very helpful. I have made a copy of the Guidelines for Living and will place it strategically in several places.

I’ve also put in my calendar to do this book study again during Lent next year. This is the first time I’ve completed a Lent study.

Thank you so much to Dr. C, Dr. Tiffany and everyone for your support, words of wisdom and openness. Peace to you!

There is nothing drastic that has changed for me. What has been confirmed is the importance of self-care routine to abide by and trust. Distractions, small and big, will come and how I handle them best is by staying grounded to my care for self and soul.

What I have fully enjoyed is to be in community during these last seven weeks, and knowing that others were with me, whether some stayed silent and others did not. Having community is life giving and soul nourishing. Thank you to each of you for your generous heart.

I look forward to doing this study in November, at my one year anniversary of stepping out in faith and leaving my mid-level management position.

Thank you again Dr. Chanequa for having written the book. Blessings everyone.

What a beautiful journey and it was even more beautiful to participate in community. The reflective practices coupled with the insightful readings really helped me to see the value of slowing down to take care of myself. It was amazing to read our community ideas of self-care and initiatives to implement sacred self-care. I'm going to continue to participate in establishing my boundaries and saying, "No." LOL. I'm really appreciative of the opportunity to sojourn with you all. Special thanks to Dr. C for extending me the opportunity to co-facilitate. XOXOXOXO

It has been life affirming for me. I started self care last May by reading Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey and when I tell you I slowed down the pace of my life and stood on my no’s as complete sentences and began to really think about what I need and want it stirred up a new thing for me. This is my 3rd time through the book and so very glad to use it as a Lenten practice this time. I have room for improvement but was glad to see the ways that I do care for myself that are good and to do it in community was a blessing. Thank you all. I even have on my list to call an institution where I minister monthly that I need to step back from that commitment for now. At least the next 6 months and then reassess. This book helped me see that. Love-Marquita

I’m still in the process of putting details and plans for actual commitments, but I have at least decided on the intentions to curtail my phone use, to focus on healthy habits that honor the gift of my body, and to reevaluate and maybe reconfigure my spiritual practices and routines. I think I came away with a deeper understanding of how influenced I am by our capitalistic culture and how much intentional effort is needed to subvert it. I’m so grateful to Dr. Chanequa, Dr. Tiffany, and all y’all who shared from a place of vulnerability, generosity, and compassion! Please feel free to reach out over social media @corriespondent anytime (caveat that I may be less responsive once I get my self care intentions into goals, haha) and keep in touch!

It has been a healing and very helpful study - reorienting to the basis for self-care being gratitude for the gift God has give us, being introduced to the idea of mental rest and mental health being linked to but separate from emotional health, learning to commit to less than I think I am capable of, and many other wonderful lessons. I have a plan for self-care now and am looking forward to doing this study again in a year to reevaluate and adjust. Thank you so much to Dr. Chanequa and Dr. Tiffany for facilitating this group and to everyone who has been a part of the beautiful, encouraging, and supportive community here.

A month after the study and I am reflecting on selfcare, boundaries, the power of both “no” and “yes”. The study made me more intentional about committing first to myself and then to others. Thank you Dr. C and Dr. T for this space. Thank all of you for the community and for your feedback.

I know that I’m in a better place now than I was 6 months ago in every area of my life.

This warms my heart so! My hope in writing the book was that it wouldn’t be a “one and done” for people, but that it would stick.

I have recommended the book to many colleagues and gifted it to friends and others who started high powered careers.

If any of you still get alerts when a new message has appeared on this feed, I wanted to share that I got an article published where I share a bit about our experience and its impact on me. It led me to write a poem dedicated to all the mothers in the group. Here is the link to the article, if you are wanting to read it: https://christiancitizen.us/self-care-reclaimed/

I pray everyone is doing well in their self-care practice.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
