I am grateful for this piece and all the experiences & other pieces that have formed you in this. And for you sharing them. I am grateful for another day to learn and be formed.
As a middle aged white psychotherapist / spiritual director / Christian/ multicultural woman who’s been & is being formed for service in this world, I am grateful & humbled.
Dr. Walker-Barnes: I'm not trying to have the last word here...I promise, but I too noticed this behavior of white males taking up the majority of the airspace in classes. I've since worked to politely shut them down and remind them to be aware of the participants in the room. One thing I did was create a "Participation Chart" that we did everyday in class (high school). I had the kids just track who talks (gender, race, nationality, etc.). We then used it to talk in class. I think it helped the students become more aware of the practice of particular groups taking up the space in class. And I hope it registered with the TALKERS. After 30+ years, I have to say, it never changes. I'd be happy to share this document with you if you'd like. Thanks for your column. Don
One of my colleagues does something similar as a way of illustrating how power moves through dialogue. I’d love to see this document. Thank you for commenting!
always love learning from you! appreciate the metaphor between being a good listener and a good ally. it’s a verb - not a title!

Dr. Chanequa-as always giving us things to think about. “Ally is not a noun” that’s bars this Sunday morning. And let the church say Amen and Ase’
